Star people lie in glasslike coffins, says archeologist...

Somewhere beneath the towering Andes mountains and the jungles of South America, a group of aliens has lain buried for thousands of years.

Archeologist Eric Van Daniken and other experts say these extraterrestrial beings lie in one of several underground cities connected by hundreds of miles of tunnels beneath western Brazil, Peru and Ecuador.

Van Daniken's attempts to penetrate the tunnels have mostly been defeated by equatorial storms, impassable jungles and a hostile Indian tribe guarding the entrances. "I hope to return as soon as I can raise enough financial support for an expedition," Van Daniken said from his home in Geneva, Switzerland.

Van Daniken, author of million-sellers Chariots of the Gods, Gods from Outer space, and In Search of Ancient Gods (all published by G. P. Putnam and Sons, Inc), says he has talked to the chief of the tribe guarding one site at Akakor in southwestern Brazil.

The Chief told him that the five humanoids he calls the "living dead" lie perfectly preserved in coffins made of glasslike materials.

"The Chief told me he went down there when he was very young," says Van Daniken. "His father took him and he looked into one of the sarcophaguses. He was afraid to tell very much about what he saw there."

Van Daniken told GLOBE that it's not known whether the bodies' life-like appearance is the result of some embalming technique unknown to us - or whether they lie in a state of suspended animation.

Now he hopes to reach the entrance of Akakor by helicopter and photograph the aliens' burial site. Such proof, he says, will alter the history of mankind.

Van Daniken believes astronauts came here more than 100,000 years ago, bred with our ancestors and produced the human race.

"The Bible tells us that man was created in the image of a supreme deity," he says. "To ancient, barely intelligent creatures, such as our ancestors, men arriving in spaceships would certainly seem to be gods."

German author Karl Brugger, who wrote The Chronicle of Akakor, has also met the tribal chief, Tatunca, but says there are only four bodies.

The Chief told him that the underground cities are always brightly lit, and that there are metal machines and small metal objects scattered over the floors of Akakor and through the tunnels.

Brugger told GLOBE from Bonn: "Tatunca said three of the aliens are men and one is a woman. They lie in a fluid that covers them up to their chests.

"They look like humans in every respect except that they have six fingers and six toes."

The aliens lie in a room near a rocket-like flying machine made of an unknown metal, "and a tribal legend tells of gods who arrived in the area in gleaming metallic ships," Brugger says.

"The Indians keep the cities a secret because they regard them as holy. Tatunca's tribe, the Mongulalas, have had the task of guarding the city of Akakor for as long as the tribe has existed - at least 13,000 years."

The first outsider to find the tunnels in Ecuador was Archeologist Juan Moricz, a Hungarian-born citizen of Argentina, in 1967.

Five years later, he agreed to show Van Daniken some of the tunnels, which are reached after a full day's trek through almost-impassable jungle.

"He was very secretive, probably because of the treasures I saw down there," Van Daniken says. It contained metallic statues of a variety of animals, many of them long since extinct, including dinosaurs.

Yet in a main room "as huge as the hangar for a jumbo jet," Van Daniken said he viewed some of the most amazing things he'd ever seen.

But the most astonishing of the treasures was the metallic library.

"This consisted partly of actual plaques and partly of metal leaves only millimeters thick, Van Daniken says. "Most of them measured about 3 ft 2 in. by 1 ft. 7 in. They were placed next to each other like bound pages of a folio.

"Each leaf had writing on it, stamped and printed regularly as if by a machine. I guess them to number two or three thousand. The characters on the pages were unknown to me or Moricz.

"The metal library was obviously created to outlast the ages, to remain legible for eternity."
